'World Heritage Class' is an educational programme designed to provide high school students, the next generation who will protect cultural heritage, with opportunities to learn about World Heritage and cultural heritage in their own communities. The programme encourages students to consider the value and significance of cultural heritage, deepen their understanding of Nara's history and culture, and foster awareness about the importance of safeguarding and passing on cultural heritage to future generations.
On Thursday, 17 September, a World Heritage Class was held for 37 third-year students at Nara Prefectural Horyuji Kokusai High Schooll.
The school enjoys a unique location, with views of the three pagodas of Ikaruga from its grounds: the five-storey pagoda of Horyu-ji Temple and the three-storey pagodas of Hoki-ji Temple and Horin-ji Temple.
Ms KUBO Michiyo, a freelance announcer and World Heritage enthusiast, was invited as the guest lecturer.
In her lecture, Ms Kubo explained the origins of the World Heritage Convention and the process of World Heritage inscription. She also introduced World Heritage sites in Europe and the challenges they face, before discussing the distinctive characteristics of Japan’s World Heritage sites. In addition, she provided an easy-to-understand introduction to the 'Ancient Capitals of Asuka-Fujiwara,' which was newly inscribed on the World Heritage List this year.
