ACCU Nara Launches New International Cooperation Project in Response to Requests from Past Training Participants!
Preserving Pacific Cultural Heritage for Future Generations: Field Survey Conducted with past training participants in Palau
2026.02.12
At ACCU Nara, we develop new international cooperation projects every year based on the needs and requests of past training participants.
This year, in response to requests from past participants from the Republic of Palau, we conducted a field survey on the current challenges surrounding cultural heritage protection in the country. Palau, a Pacific paradise with a population of approximately 18,000, preserves not only mixed heritage sites such as the UNESCO World Heritage "Rock Islands Southern Lagoon" but also a rich variety of cultural heritage. The islands are home to many stone cultural properties known as gstone facesh as well as traditional wooden structures called "Bai".
During this visit, ACCU met with Minister Ngiraibelas Tmetuchl of the Ministry of Human Resources, Culture, Tourism and Development to exchange views on how the islandfs tourism resources—including cultural heritage, natural heritage, and war-related heritage—can be managed in the future, as well as on the need for digital documentation to preserve and promote these heritage assets. We plan to design future training programs that can contribute to addressing these two issues.
ACCU also visited the Embassy of Japan in Palau and met with Ambassador Kasahara, who kindly shared many valuable insights. In addition, we visited the JICA Palau Office, where we received information and exchanged opinions on the progress of JICAfs new gTourism Project,h which focuses on the war heritage remaining on the islands.
Updates on the projects to be launched this year will be reported on our website in due course. We warmly welcome further training proposals from former ACCU trainees as well.

This visit has also been featured on the website of the Embassy of Japan in Palau.

On 13 and 14 December, the ACCU International Symposium 2023 ""Disaster Risk Management for Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region - Current State and Issues (3): Disaster Mitigation and Preparedness for Resilience Building"" was held at the Nara Prefectural Convention Centre.

This year marked the third and concluding year of the series of symposiums held under the topic DRM for cultural heritage, which has been ongoing since 2021. After two years of online conferences, this year's symposium was held on-site in Nara and brought together the leading heritage professionals from Japan, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal and ICCROM to discuss the current approaches and share experiences on how heritage can be better protected from disasters while also contributing to the resilience of societies.

On 15 December the panellists visited the Imai-cho Preservation District in Kashihara city and learned about the townscape preservation initiatives, including the disaster risk reduction efforts involving the local communities.
In the afternoon, symposium participants observed the Nara Prefecture Historical and Artistic Culture Complex.
Guided tour by the curators provided a unique opportunity to get very close to and examine the extraordinarily detailed conservation techniques of cultural properties.

ACCU Nara would like to thank all panellists, as well as the guest speakers and observers for joining the sessions and for valuable contributions that enriched the discussions on disaster mitigation for heritage and communities.

Regional Workshop 2023
Workshop for Cultural Heritage Protection 2023 in Indonesia
2023.10.31
A six-day Cultural Heritage Workshop on Disaster Risk Management for Cultural Heritage was held in Yogyakarta, Republic of Indonesia, from 16-21 October.

Eighteen cultural heritage specialists from different regions of Indonesia and affiliated with relevant Indonesian Government agencies gathered in Yogyakarta to gain a new understanding of the cultural heritage attributes and values and define the hazards and their potential impact on each surveyed area. They then discussed the disaster mitigation plans and strategies.

Indonesia lies on the Ring of Fire and is one of the most disaster-prone areas in the world. This calls for strengthened preparedness to protect heritage from earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and resulting fires. The participants, who came from all over the country, are expected to play an active role in managing disaster risks for cultural heritage in their respective regions with the knowledge they acquired during this workshop.

Yogyakarta just a couple of weeks ago became a world heritage for being an exceptional testimony to Javanese civilization and culture.

ACCU Group Training Course 2023
ACCU Group Training Course on Conservation and Management of Wooden Built Heritage has been completed
2023.10.05
From 10 August to 21 September, 15 young heritage professionals from 14 countries of the Asia-Pacific region attended the intensive training course in Conservation and Management of Wooden built heritage, held online and on-site in Nara. After three years of hiatus, ACCU hosted the participants in Nara to share the knowledge and characteristics of architectural preservation in Japan for both - individual wooden structures and historical districts.

It was an incredible journey from classroom discussions to on-site work sessions and study tours across the country. Participants worked individually and in groups to survey the wooden structures for damage, formulated repair plans, experienced the use of traditional carpentry tools, learned diverse cultural expressions in architectural preservation and created bonds that we hope will never break.

ACCU is grateful to all participants for their hard work and remarkable performance during the training period. We believe that they can draw lessons from Japan's experiences in order to advance the protection and preservation of the wooden built heritage in their home countries.
